Evidence links the personality trait hardiness to both mental (MH) and physical health (PH) status, but few unifying models delineate interrelationships of these variables. The first purpose of this study was to examine the association of hardiness to MH and PH in military men. Second, we tested the hypothesis that MH would mediate the association of hardiness with PH. Identical measures were collected in two separate, demographically-similar samples (n = 65 and n = 55). All subjects completed a background questionnaire, the Dispositional Resilience Scale-15 and the Short Form 36 Medical Outcomes Survey. Associations between hardiness, PH and MH were examined using regression-based mediation analyses followed by the Sobel test of indirect effects. In the total sample, hardiness predicted PH in an initial regression model (Beta = 0.37).

Physical rehabilitation services are essential to the functional status and independence of individuals with disabilities, particularly those with musculoskeletal conditions. These conditions affect millions of Americans and account for $45-54 billion in compensation costs and lost wages and productivity annually (Leopold 2004). Consider these facts: Physical disability far more often results from musculoskeletal conditions: arthritis, osteoporosis, broken bones, trauma caused by sports injuries or automobile accidents, back pain and cerebral palsythan from neurological injury or disease. One in 10 people has difficulty walking, and that limitation is most commonly the result of musculoskeletal conditions. Knee osteoarthritis alone causes more mobility disability in the elderly than any other disease. The prevalence of people with disabilities due to musculoskeletal conditions will grow as we live longer. Physical rehabilitation research includes studying musculoskeletal function and performance, improving the capacity to perform specific activities, determining the role of the environment in fostering or reducing disability, and analyzing models of care delivery and their effects on disability. Despite the significant impact of musculoskeletal disorders, the number of research projects supported by the federal government in physical rehabilitation for these conditions is small compared to the research effort in areas such as heart disease and cancer. Furthermore, there are few nationally accepted guidelines on physical rehabilitation therapies.

This report presents the results of an agency-wide survey of employee health and wellness to determine workforce involvement in and satisfaction with the Federal Aviation Administration's Health Awareness Program (HAP). Surveys were received from 3,262 employees, representing a 45% response rate. Results indicated that about half the workforce had heard about HAP and that about half the workforce had participated in one or more HAP events (even if they did not realize that the event was HAP-sponsored). In terms of attendance, the most popular HAP information programs were health fairs, health awareness lectures, and stress management awareness programs. Likewise, annual flu shots, cholesterol screening, blood chemistry screening, and blood pressure screening were the most popular HAP service programs. Analyses found a consistent relationship between HAP participation and employee exercise rates, involvement in healthy lifestyle behaviors, and overall wellness. These findings may have been influenced to some extent by respondent characteristics, which were somewhat disproportionately over age 45, female, and managerial. However, the respondents' backgrounds matched previous study results, indicating that Federal Aviation Administration respondents accurately represent the FLAP customer base -- that segment of the workforce most interested in health and wellness.

Over the course of the last decade, research in health promotion has documented211the positive effects of a healthy lifestyle on health outcomes. A growing body of 211evidence clearly indicates that healthy behaviors play a major role in preventing 211unnecessary disease, postponing disability and improving quality of life for all 211age groups, including older adults. In addition, changing certain health 211behaviors, even in old age, can benefit health and quality of life. The overall 211purpose of the Northwest Geriatric Education Center's Curriculum Module Series is 211to provide community-based providers in the field of aging with a set of self-211study guides to assist them in developing and implementing various health 211promotion interventions to prevent disease and postpone further disability for 211the older adults they serve. Each Curriculum Module covers a specific age-related 211physical or mental health condition that can be prevented, postponed, or 211ameliorated by health promotion interventions.

This Call to Action focuses on the need to promote sexual health and responsible sexual behavior throughout the lifespan. Its primary goal is to stimulate respectful, thoughtful, and mature discussion in our communities and in our homes. While sexuality may be difficult to discuss for some, and there are certainly many different views and beliefs regarding it, we cannot afford the consequences of continued or selective silence. It is necessary to find common ground--balancing diversity of opinion with the best available scientific evidence and best practice models--to improve the health of our nation. This Call to Action is also the first step toward the development of guidelines to assist parents, clergy, teachers, and others in their work of improving sexual health and responsible sexual behavior.
